The warmer months are a great time of the year. We’re able to dust off that which accumulated in the long, cold winter and start afresh. When it comes to the home, this means opening in the windows, removing clutter and doing a deep clean.
But it’s not just the home that needs a fresh start.
Oftentimes, the winter is hard on our mind, body and soul. It’s why 3% of the UK suffer with seasonal affective disorder; and why we’re all talking about getting a beach-ready body.
There are just some things that we tend to pack on during the winter.
Today, I’d like to take a few minutes and run through a cleaning checklist that will help you knock off those winter blues once and for all. I’ve broken the list down by category to make things easier. Enjoy!
“The mind is everything. What you think you become.” – Buddha
Having a clear mind is important, but also incredibly difficult in this day and age. With stress, the need to constantly be connected and unfulfillment running rampant, our minds can quickly get cluttered and noisy.
This year, it’s important to take a proactive approach to a healthy mind. Here are a few ways to start you down that path...
Meditate: Taking up a meditation practice is a great way to clear the mind, find peace and get in tune with the present moment.
Learn Some Breathing Exercises: If you need a way to quickly calm stress, doing a few breathing exercise can quickly reduce anxiety and bring some calm to your mind.
Change Your Inner Voice: Are you the kind of person that has a lot of negative self-talk? If so, make a commitment to speak more kindly to yourself.
Start a Journal: Journaling is a great way to get your thoughts out, especially if you don’t have someone you talk to about deeper issues on a regular basis.
Sleep: One of the best things you can do for you mind is get enough sleep. Start establishing an evening routine and getting into bed on time.
In the summertime, focus is all on getting that beach-ready body. Outrageous diets, cleanses and weight loss techniques flood the market in hopes of preying on this fad.
However, if you truly want a clean body, it’s more than just shedding those winter pounds. You need to start investing in a truly healthy lifestyle that will last for the rest of your life, not just for a few summer months.
I’m not talking about weight loss here – though that may be a benefit – I’m talking about living with a truly healthy body. Here are a few tips:
Drink Herbal Teas: Camomile, peppermint and passion flower are a few to get you started. Herbal teas can help your body in all sorts of ways – from pain relief, anxiety and even sickness.
Go to the Farmer’s Market: Buying local produce not only supports your community, but it also provides you with higher quality foods that are free of harmful pesticides and steroids.
Remove Sugar from Your Diet: Sugar causes all sorts of problems within your body, and is one of the more common addictions in the world today. This is a great way to live healthier.
Start an Exercise Regimen: Very few of us actually get enough exercise every week. Start by making small commitments, like a 10-minute walk or taking the stairs instead of the lift.
Spend Time Outside: Getting in touch with nature is great for your mind, body and soul. Find an activity you enjoy and start doing it outdoors – whether it’s painting, hiking or anything else!
“When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator.” – Mahatma Gandhi
Finally, the soul.
When I think of the soul, I think of the feelings within us that cannot be measured. It’s the wonder you feel while seeing something beautiful; the pain you experience during loss; the overwhelming joy on a great day.
Just like the mind and body, your soul can pick up unwanted passengers along the way. Over time, this energy clouds your vitality and hinders your fulfillment.
Taking time to cleanse this part of your life is very important.
Forgive Others: Don’t hold onto bitterness. Having unforgiveness towards others only hurts you, not them. If you truly want freedom, let it go and be full of forgiveness and love.
Forgive Yourself: Perhaps even more difficult than forgiving others is forgiving yourself. But it’s time to let go of those regrets and give yourself permission to be happy.
Release Negativity: Let go of the negativity – whether it’s people, energy, thoughts or feelings. You deserve a life full of positivity, love and joy.
Surround Yourself With Love: In contrast, replace that negativity with love. Find supportive friends, use a positive mantra, embrace feelings of love all around you.
Unplug for a Day: We’re often too connected to the digital world that we miss out on life. Take a day each week to completely unplug and live in the moment.
