"Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall."
- F. Scott Fitzgerald
A favorite quote that I am sure you will see across your Instagram and Facebook feeds, but he's right. There is something so refreshing about the leaves falling. Shedding the heat, the dead leaves, and embracing the calm serenity that comes from autumn.
A Time For Transformation
It's easy to see fall and the changing of the leaves as a beacon of nature dying, but it isn't. Fall is the ultimate personification of self-preservation and vitality. You shed your leaves, your warmth, your former self, and prepare for the cold. There is an understood strength in revealing a new self just in time for the holidays, for the cold, for the end of the year. This transformative act exists for most of us as we continue to work through this thing called life. We're all just going through our day trying to figure things out. There isn't a manual for it, and if there is one, it's written by a celebrity trying to sell you something. We're all just working to survive and to do that we need to transform. Transform into a person who sees the changing of the leaves as a reminder that we too, need to let things go. The parts that aren't working for us any longer. The pieces that suck all of our energy and give us nothing in return. Like the trees, we need to let them go so we can prepare for the cold.
The serene beauty of fall creates a sense of finding warmth and life beyond the weather. There are candles, warm blankets, and oversized sweaters. There is a universal hunt for warmth, coziness, and contentment. As we focus on finding our internal heat, there are other ways to help ease the process of letting go and finding inner serenity.
Alternative medicine offers multiple ways to assist in this process. Taking a few minutes out of the day to meditate and be one with yourself can have a dramatic effect on your stress levels, emotional state, and more. Work through your chakras to empower yourself to let go of things. Utilize energy healing to find balance and decrease stress and pain. Carve out time in your day to sit quietly and reflect on what is feeding your energy vs. draining it. What do you need to let go?
Find Your Winter Resilience
Changing leaves and decreasing temperatures isn't just a fall aesthetic (although it's hard not to feel that way). It's a transition into a colder and darker time. Not only does fall encourage you to transform along with nature, but it also encourages you to find and craft your resilience. What do you need to prepare for your winter? When it's colder, darker, and you don't want to leave your home. Fall lets us know it's time to seek the warmth of a different kind. We no longer worship the sun but revert to fireplaces, hot chocolate, and our cave. We return to a different type of personal nature. One of security and internal comfort. We shed our facade (leaves) and focus on just being our true selves. There is a built-in understanding that this time of year is perfect for this.
Escape the chaos of the outside world and focus on a more purposeful life. We focus so much energy on the to and from in life instead of just living in the moment. Letting go, shedding our leaves, and finding our inner cozy is only one step closer to that slow living hygge lifestyle.
Stop focusing on the leaves you have, but the roots you have - the life you have.
It's time to transform.
