Over the past several weeks, I’ve had the privilege of conducting interviews with some remarkable people around the world. Their stories have inspired me so much that I wanted to share it with you all as well.
In today’s installment, the spotlight turns to Robin Waters Casper. She is a CA Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Reiki Master Teacher/Practitioner and an author/self-publisher. She also owns Waters N Light Reiki N Books.
(Editor’s Note: The rest of this post is from Robin’s point-of-view, with only minor edits for clarity and formatting. Take it away, Robin!)
Pain Ignited My Initial Interest in Healing
I became interested in complementary methods of healing because of my own personal struggles with health issues, pain disorders and digestive disease that were devastating.
I had received Reiki Energy healing in several of my episodes. Each time it played a big part in learning how to manage symptoms – and in some instances relieve pain. It helped me bring my body, mind and spirit into more balance with much more peace of mind and some increased functionality.
I have suffered from:
- Carpal Tunnel
- Reflexive Sympathetic Distrophy (now called Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome)
- Celiac Disease
- A weakened auto-immune system (that tested as Lupus initially but some question as to whether that particular diagnosis was accurate),
- Associated problems with blood clots and infections
- And much emotional distress and symptoms due to the treatment of these disorders with traditional Western Medicine, such as pharmaceuticals and extremely painful procedures or diagnostic procedures.
During the last full-blown bout, the pain was so excruciating that I could not stand or walk, and my insides hurt so much that I was certain that perhaps I might be dying. Thus, taking addictive pain pills became my only option at that dire point.
I became dependent on them and they worsened my symptoms with withdrawal pain and side effects when I reached the meltdown process of going into to hospital to detox and quit them all.
At that time, I began working on my diet for cleansing, taking supplements, and went off all medications except for over-the-counter.
I continued with some of the alternative methods that included an allergy elimination regimen of clearing irritants to my system with energy technique called NAET, Nambruipad's Allergy Elimination Treatment. I also received several spot treatments with Reiki which I had used for an earlier bout of illness ten years earlier but had forgotten about and had not even connected it with my remission.
Learning Reiki With a Friend
About nine months later, after being on the gradual upswing, a friend of mine called on the spur of the moment and asked if I wanted to go with her to a Reiki One Class. She said it would help me because then I could provide Reiki to myself on a daily basis.
I agreed and the rest is history.
I began using Reiki to provide myself healing energy, and to practice on others (in my area we are allowed to provide Reiki to other people if we follow some guidelines set forth in the California Health and Freedom Act of 2002).
I introduced my physician, who had been following me for the last 12 years, to my NAET provider and they built an alliance – in fact they fell in love and married. I began working in his office as a Reiki practitioner and then later when I received Reiki 2 and then my Usui Reiki Master Teacher training.
Working With the Medical Field
During this time, I had many discussions with him and his office staff about how I might be able to bring Reiki treatment to our medical center system, Enloe Medical Center.
We only have one hospital in my town and it is associated with many areas of health all over the city, everything from bariatric treatment to physical rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient to urgent care to a cancer center.
I requested the help of my Reiki Master Teacher. She asked if one of her Reiki Master Teacher students could help us. She was already a volunteer at Enloe and using Reiki. Another volunteer was too, albeit, somewhat under the radar, in the hospice program.
I agreed how fortuitous this was to have someone already doing this there to help us with our proposal. I didn't know at the time that she was a Professor Meritus from our local college, California State University Chico. Her doctorate and experience was instrumental in our pulling this proposal together in a professional manner.
At first, my doctor was going to be involved but he soon retired and this did not occur.
The three of us met regularly to hammer out our proposal over several months before we called to set a meeting with the Volunteer Services. We made a good team. I am the creative idea person, one has paralegal experience, and the professor is phenomenal with organizing information and presenting it. She also has extraordinary time management skills.
We felt confident that this was the right time for us to introduce Reiki into Enloe, especially as the system has been striving to rise in the Planetree Model standings from Bronze to Gold.
Proposing a Reiki Volunteer Program
Plantree Model was begun by a patient who was basically traumatized by her hospital experience in the United States. She began this movement of patient-centered care that included ten components of which our proposal of offering Reiki were on target; honoring a person's spirituality, positive touch, and offering complementary methods.
At any rate, to make a long, wonderful story short, we proposed a Reiki Volunteer Program and they agreed to try a pilot program in the Cancer Center for three months. It has been an incredible experience with staff accepting us whole-heartedly with much kindness and appreciation.
The evaluations from patients were overwhelmingly positive and we were accepted as a regular program after the three months. At this point, there are plans for expansion and we are training other Reiki Practitioner Volunteers and couldn't be happier with the way things have unfolded.
Other Projects and Moving Forward
I have other projects that I have worked on, including:
- Waters N Light Reiki N Books
- My website www.watersnlight.com
- Teaching Reiki collaboratively on the internet at Learn it Live Academy
- Recording a multi-use grounding meditation against original harp music played by Dr. and Reverand Katy Valentine
- Creating more classes on learn it live
- Selling products on my website
- Continued work on my spiritual/psychological/metaphysical book writing and publishing projects of which a series collection of healers phenomenal stories is in the works for the coming years.
In additional all that, I've recently begun my own facebook group for my fellow Reiki Master Teachers for the express purpose of other RMTs to support each other in the teaching of Reiki called, Helping Reiki Master Teachers Teach.
I envision this group as a way to connect and benefit as we learn from each other while on the journey to bring Reiki into the mainstream. I only formed it a week ago and we have nearly 40 people from all over the globe, UK, Canada, Netherlands, Australia, New Zealand, India and the US. I also help anyone or Reiki MasterTeachers with power point presentations for their classes or workshops which is a services listed on my website.
So I've been very busy.
I invite anyone who is interested in what I'm doing to visit my website; www.watersnlight.com and/or to enroll in Learn it Live Academy which is free to enroll and where there are many free classes as well as awesome spiritual and health classes by some well-known and not so well-known presenters.
