There is plenty of discussion these days about patient empowerment. Medical patients suffering from an array of diseases and ailments now have more information than ever about their conditions and potential treatments. But what does that really mean, and especially what does it mean for complimentary and alternative medicine?
Giving the power back to the patients
If we think about medicine even just a few decades ago, people were largely in the dark about their problems, and simply had to trust in their doctors and caretakers to treat them correctly. It removed opportunity from patients to try what was outside of the "mainstream" or even actually get appropriate care when ailments were trickier to diagnose and instead they had to rely on experimental treatments and procedures.
Now, patients have access to so much more information. Through a combination of medical advancement, more alternative practices being taught and learned, and access to the internet, patients can now have a broader perspective on how they wish to go about their medical treatments. This ensures that patients are not only following specific recommendations from doctors and nurses, but are able to more easily seek out treatments that may work better for them.
What patient empowerment means for CAM
When patients have more access to different types of treatments to relieve their suffering, it means that more patients may learn about and seek out the healing benefits of CAM.
If more people are able to experience how healers can help to relieve their chronic pain and other imbalances in their mind and bodies, then there may be less people needing to rely heavily on prescriptions or other treatments which can have dangerous or uncomfortable side effects.
Maybe more importantly, is that patient empowerment and access to information can help more people understand what CAM actually is. There is plenty of misinformation and misconceptions about what CAM and specifically energy healing is, and with more testimonials and correct information online and in communities, people can have a better, more accurate understanding. Misinformation and misconceptions can lead people who could greatly benefit from CAM away from alternative treatments, meaning that less people may access a form of relief that could truly help them.
What this means for CAM supporters and practitioners
Because information is power, and often in alternative medicine first time patients want to hear about the experiences of others before trying for themselves, it's important for us to talk about it as much as possible. Especially at Relief from Pain, we are not some secret society only providing healing help to those who are lucky to know about what we do.
Access is so important and vital to patient care, and is the foundation for an empowered populace that isn't beholden to pharmaceutical companies. We want to help people see that there are more options for them, and that through research and learning, they may find an alternative that is more suitable for them and what they are looking for in terms of relief.
As practitioners, and members of the greater healing community, it's important that we continue to operate, providing access to more people seeking pain relief, and that our clients and supporters share their stories of healing and holistic health.
We often discuss how healing is part of full body wellness. As you would take care of your body through nutrition and exercise, your mind through meditation, relaxation and therapy, healing addresses the health of your energy - which permeates and connects mind, body, and soul. When we empower patients to learn more about what CAM is and what it entails, the more people will seek out access to alternative practices, and energy healing. Because of this, we need to share more information and experiences, in order to truly help more patients to be empowered.
