When people talk about volunteering, they often focus on what others will receive from your contribution. And while that’s a noble approach, it’s naive to think that the volunteers don’t want to get something out of it too.
That doesn’t make you selfish. It just makes you human.
As you contribute your talents to Relief from Pain, we’re confident that you’ll feel fulfilled and overjoyed by what you get in return for helping others.
It’s a feeling that money can’t buy.
You’ll experience a connection with yourself, others and your community in a way you never have before. It’s an exciting feeling for every type of volunteer in our organization.
A few things that you’ll get in return include:
The opportunity to discover, develop and hone your life’s ultimate purpose.
An experience with the overwhelming feeling that accompanies being truly needed by the people around you.
The knowledge that you’re contributing your time and effort to a cause that’s helping to save and change people’s lives for the better.
Access to a like-minded community of people that want to help make this world a better place for everyone.
In today’s article, we’ll discuss each of the benefits in a bit more detail. By the end, I’m convinced that you’ll feel just as passionate for volunteering as those that have been doing it for many years.
Develop Your Life’s Purpose
Everyone has an innate desire to have a purpose in their life. It’s something that wells up inside of us at a young age; something telling us that there’s more to life than our personal bubble.
One of my favourite definitions of this bubble comes from Leo Babauta over at Zen Habits:
Your personal bubble is the small world you live in (we all have one), where you are the center of the universe. You are concerned with your wellbeing, with not wanting to look bad, with succeeding in life, with your personal pleasure (good food, good music, etc.).
When you’re volunteering at Relief from pain, you’re launching way outside that bubble.
You’ll find yourself concerned with the wellbeing of others, focused on their pain and how your talents can help relieve it. Trust me, there’s no better feeling in the world.
Enjoy Feeling Needed by Others
I’ve never met someone that doesn’t enjoy feeling needed by someone else. At our core, human beings want to take care of one another. It’s that driving force that has enabled mankind to stand the test of time so far.
It’s a great quality that we’re all capable of having. One blog captures this desire perfectly:
The truth is that everyone likes to feel wanted and needed. This isn’t us boosting our own ego or indulging in our over-inflated importance – it’s a need and desire is right at the core of who we are.
Each and every one of us is unique. We have a genetic makeup, a belief system, a value system, a whole box of talents and skills which, when all of them are put together, makes us different to every other human being out there. And when you find someone – whether that is a partner, friend, or organisation – that wants you or needs you for you, then you can feel like you’re flying high.
As a volunteer, you’ll have hurting people that desperately need your help on a regular basis. You will have the opportunity to work directly with them.
It’s one of the best benefits of volunteering, in my opinion.
Serve a Cause That Changes Lives
In regard to the services provided by Relief from Pain, Monique – a Dutch Sales Professional – shared the following simple statement:
"It gave me back my inner peace."
If you’ve ever lost your inner peace, then you know how life-changing it is to find it again. That’s the type of thing that our volunteers help people achieve.
Whether you’re acting as a healer for chronic physical pain or deliberating emotional pain, you have the chance to change someone’s life every time you come to the charity to volunteer your talents and time.
Become Part of a Community
Life is all about the connections we make and communities we develop.
As a volunteer with us, you’ll be able to forge lifelong friendships and relationships with people that have similar passions, beliefs and goals.
We’re all in this together.
If you’re wandering about looking for a place to call home, our community of volunteers will welcome you with open arms. We’d love to take you in and embrace your gifts as a part of our community as well.
